For preschool physical education use these Moving skills build a foundation for movement. Add some good alignment awareness and you will hear your child shout:  I Can Do That!

With the this second part in a series of exercises and drills, YOU will be able to guide your child in their development of their balance and posture.

Task ONE: Tiptoe Walking…Builds A Solid Base for Moving Skills

STEP BY STEP PROGRESSIONS

To work moving skills during kids play try this:

YOU can make a big difference in your youngster’s locomotion abilities during their play.

In a calm voice, ASK you child to:

  1. Place their feet side-by-side.
  2. Extend the ankles to STAND on toes.
  3. Balance HIGH as you can on the balls of your feet.
  4. Press the heels together.
  5. That action will help the child keep their balance.
  6. That point IS VERY IMPORTANT.
  7. Drop the heels to the floor.
  8. TRY this tiptoe skill WALKING.
  9. Lift to tiptoes again and keep that stretched foot as the child walks forward.
  10. Keep HEELS HIGH!

Note: Suggest the child uses there arms for balance while walking.

TASK #1 OBJECTIVE: CONTROL OF LEGS This simple challenge introduces the locked knees concept.

Task TWO:  Heel Walking…Strengthens Feet and Legs A Solid Base for Moving Skills

STEP BY STEP PROGRESSIONS

To work moving skills during kids play try this:

YOU can make a big difference in your youngster’s movement abilities during their play.

In a calm voice, ASK you child to:

  1. Place their feet parallel.
  2. Moving across the practice area [in a straight line], have the child walk on alternating heels.
  3. Lift the toes off the ground.
  4. The toes and forefoot should be kept OFF the floor.
  5. Knees will be STRAIGHT during the steps.
  6. The steps should be slow and deliberate.
  7. Helper Hint: Clap an easy rhythm to urge progress to finish area.

TASK #2 OBJECTIVE: FOOT & BALANCE This task will increase strength and flexibility of the feet and build balance management abilities.

Task THREE:  Walking On the Outside Edges of the Feet…Builds A Solid Base for Moving Skills

STEP BY STEP PROGRESSIONS

To work moving skills during kids play try this:

YOU can make a big difference in your youngster’ movement abilities during their play.

In a calm voice, ASK you child to: Move across an open and safe area while trying to walk on the outside edges of their feet.

  1. Feet are parallel.
  2. Roll weight to the outside EDGES of the feet.
  3. Take one step forward supporting body on outside edge of foot.
  4. Helper Hint: The gait will be funny!
  5. Tell the child to have fun with this exercise.
  6. Do it funny!
  7. Move across the practice area to finish line.
  8. Remember to keep the toes pointing forward as they move.

TASK #3 OBJECTIVE:DIRECTED SKILLS PRACTICE It is important to develop pliability in the foot. Using the tightened knees and body leaning forward to aid the balance.

Task FOUR:  Walking on the INSIDE Edges of the Foot…Builds Foot Strength for Moving Skills

STEP BY STEP PROGRESSIONS

To work moving skills during kids play try this:

YOU can make a big difference in your youngster’s movement and balance abilities during their play.

In a calm voice, ASK you child to:

  1. Place feet parallel at the start line.
  2. Roll weight to the inside EDGES of the feet.
  3. WALK forward. Use the arms to aid balance.
  4. Note: The gait will be REALLY funny!
  5. Remember to keep the toes pointing forward forward as the child moves.
  6. That idea IS VERY IMPORTANT.
  7. Helper Hint: You will see most children really using the arms and hands as they move.
  8. In this exercise, waving arms is OK!
  9. Moving will look very awkward. Just TRY it!

TASK #4 OBJECTIVE: FOOT USE & STRENGTHENING This task begins the essential work on their feet. Take care in observing the work is important.

Task FIVE: Marching KNEES Up High!…Learning New Moving Skills

STEP BY STEP PROGRESSIONS

To work moving skills during kids play try this:

YOU can make a big difference in your youngster’s balance and control of movement during their play.

In a calm voice, ASK you child to:

  1. Use high knee lifting action to get lots of motion.
  2. Start in the feet side-by-side position.
  3. Keep body TALL. Stretch the spine.
  4. Begin to move across the practice pathway.
  5. Remember to keep the toes pointing forward forward as the child moves.
  6. Swing the arms as the marching moves the action forward.
  7. Helper Hint: You can clap a steady beat or play some peppy music.
  8. Then try marching backwards.
  9. As the rhythm of the movement smooths out, the arms SWING freely, front to back, skimming the sides of the body.

 

TASK # 5 OBJECTIVE: DEVELOPING RHYTHM By moving muscles, stimulating nerves, this exercise makes the body coordination improve by emphasizing a beat with their feet. Take good care in observing the precision of the work that is being attempted.

Teaching Hints for Turning Kids Play into Build Brain Time

  • The senses will connect the muscles to the brain as the child strives to move well.
  • Make sure that the practice times for this task are SHORT and happy!
  • Check to make certain that that each single arm is moving in opposition to the lifted leg.
  • Ask other children to join in a parade.
  • Marching is a great way to move!

Variations on this exercise would be changes in speed: quick, slow. Preschool learning is based on rhythms and group work. Moving skills must be encouraged during kids play to make sure that preschool learning comes from fun times.

Each SKILL SET has a series tasks to try under your watchful eyes.
Theses tiny jobs are quick to do.

Think of each task as: little jobs to do. But they will attempted under your educated eyes.
